Mechanical Design Engineer

eMatrix is a full-service supplier of battery systems located in Southfield Michigan focused on developing next-generation battery systems that will accelerate the clean energy revolution.  This position will be responsible for designing and developing enclosures with an emphasis on Structural integrity, Thermal management, Venting and Customer interfaces. Additionally, this position will engage with multiple functions, and customers where advanced planning, clear communication, and vendor management are key for success in this role.

eMatrix Energy Systems Designs, develops and manufactures battery systems for a variety of applications in the transportation and industrial industries. As a relatively small company, eMatrix functions as a fast acting, agile, and responsive team. Key Accountabilities:

  • Determine design specifications through hand calculations; collaborate with simulation specialists to confirm details of designs.
  • Design of machined metal parts that can be manufactured at production scale.
  • Ability to generate complex 3D models and assemblies using Fusion 360 or other modeling
  • Perform assembly tolerance stack-ups and generate 2D component and assembly drawings utilizing GD&T.
  • Communicate technical requirements to vendors in a clear and concise manner, manage vendor timelines and budgets.
  • Follow the automotive advanced product quality planning (APQP) framework including failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and the production part approval process (PPAP).
  • Use in-house and external test facilities to develop and validate the product.
  • Occasional hands-on work for prototyping and testing.
  • Comply with all applicable company policies and procedures (i.e. Quality System Procedures)

Minimum Requirements:

  • 5 or more years of relevant professional experience (can include work in graduate school)
  • S. or M.S. in Mechanical/Aerospace engineering
  • Extensive experience with mechanical design including 2D drawing, 3D CAD, GD&T, geometric and statistical stack-ups and manufacturing processes
  • Strong understanding of the best practices of vendor management
  • Comfort with hand calculations based on first-principles analysis
  • Experience in some of the following areas an asset:
    • Product development
    • Battery industry
    • Industrialization and production
